A variety of leg injuries can be painful for the body and can cause swelling in the affected areas. There are number of different types of knee injuries – some can happen slowly over time and some occur suddenly through a sudden impact. Those injuries which happen on a sudden basis are called acute injuries, and those which happen over time are called overuse injuries. As the name suggests, overuse means that the injury can happen to anybody through the consistent wear and tear of bones and muscles, mostly in old age. Acute injuries are spontaneous and are caused by direct impact, falling due to imbalance and other reasons. Acute injuries can cause bruises, cuts, bleeding, sprains and even a fracture of the bone in some of the more serious cases.

The knee is one of the most important joints of the body because it helps you to move, walk, run, sit, and bend. The type of medical assistance you will require mainly depends upon the type of injury you received, but most of the time if it is not that serious, resting is always recommended. Bed rest is a solution to almost every type of injury and sickness. If you give your body and they affected area some rest, the muscles actually relax and there is a greater chance of recovery in less days. This will even help you reduce the pain and swollen knee. If the knee pain does not help with resting or massage, you should definitely look for medical assistance.

One of the most helpful treatments for the knee injuries is called the RICE method. It is a very effective method and consists of four main components for proper knee injuries treatment. The word R stands for rest, which is already explained above with its advantages in the treatment of knee injuries. Next the word I stand for ice, C stands for compression and lastly E stands for elevation.

Ice is a very helpful tool and home healing remedy to treat acute bruises and injuries – it can help reduce the initial swelling and reddening of the skin. An ice pack can be taken and properly wrapped in a cotton cloth bag, then rubbed gently over the knee injury for around 20 minutes, every 2 to 3 hours for a few days. This will reduce swelling and helps heals the wound from inside. Special care has to be taken in the case that the ice is not left on the wound too long as it can cause disturbance in blood circulation, and you can even catch frostbite.

Another helpful treatment is called compression. As the name suggests, you can promote healing through the compression of the wound with your hands or a bandage wrap. There are knee bandages and knee elastic bands available in the market. These bands compress the known injury and help to keep it warm and allow it to heal. For an overuse type of injury, you can wear these knee bands at night before sleeping. For an acute type of injury it is recommended to massage with hot oil and then keep the elastic band on the knee on a regular basis.

Last of the RICE methods is evaluation. When there is injury in the knee, inflammation is always felt and it has to be reduced to get an effective and timed recovery. Take a pillow and put it below your knee so that the knee is elevated above your heart. Elevate it in this manner for relief from inflammation and increased healing.

You should also visit the doctor and orthopedics specialist on a regular basis which can help you in planning an effective treatment. Doctors often suggest number of muscle relaxing gels which are to be applied on the injured knees before compression. If there are fractures or cracks in the bones, doctors may suggest x-rays at first, which are very important to check if the bones are in place, displaced or fractured. If there is fracture or some other serious bone injury, you may be plastered with a cast for a few weeks with a recommendation to elevate of your leg to induce proper recovery.

There are a number of ways to treat and heal the knee injuries, but on the very first place they should always be prevented. Before any type of sports activity, such as rollerblading or football, you should check all of your protective body equipment to make sure you can sustain and protect against acute injuries. You can even warm up a little before starting any type of physical activity through light stretching or yoga. Always take proper measures to protect against acute injuries and be aware of the possibility of overuse injuries from your daily habits.
